because they bore illegitimate children.
Soon 2 the new moon festival will devour them and their fields.
5:9 Ephraim will be ruined in the day of judgment! 3

7:5 At the celebration 6 of their king, 7
his princes become inflamed 8 with wine;
they conspire 9 with evildoers.
7:8 Ephraim has mixed itself like flour 10 among the nations;
Ephraim is like a ruined cake of bread that is scorched on one side. 11
8:6 That idol was made by a workman – it is not God!
The calf idol of Samaria will be broken to bits.
8:9 They have gone up to Assyria,
like a wild donkey that wanders off.
Ephraim has hired prostitutes as lovers. 12
9:9 They have sunk deep into corruption 13
as in the days of Gibeah.
He will remember their wrongdoing.
He will repay them for their sins.
9:13 Just as lion cubs are born predators, 14
so Ephraim will bear his sons for slaughter.
12:10 I spoke to the prophets;
I myself revealed many visions; 15
I spoke in parables 16 through 17 the prophets.”
12:13 The Lord brought Israel out of Egypt by a prophet,
and due to a prophet 18 Israel 19 was preserved alive. 20
13:6 When they were fed, 21 they became satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud; 22
as a result, they forgot me!
13:11 I granted 23 you a king in my anger,
and I will take him away in my wrath!
